Noisy Neighbors in Your Apartment: What You Can Actually Do

    By x96i8October 26, 2026

It starts small. A bass line you can feel through the wall at 11 p.m. A parade of heavy footsteps over your head at six in the morning. A dog that barks for hours after its owner leaves. You tell yourself it will pass. Weeks later, you are exhausted, resentful, and rehearsing speeches in the shower. Noise is one of the most common reasons people are unhappy in apartments, and the good news is that you have more options than suffering in silence.

First, decide what kind of noise it is

Not all noise is equal, legally or practically. There is ordinary living noise, such as footsteps, a vacuum cleaner, a TV at a sensible volume, or a washing machine. Most buildings, especially older ones, simply carry sound, and a reasonable tenant has to put up with normal household activity. Then there is excessive or unreasonable noise: loud parties, shouting matches, thumping music, power tools, or constant barking. The second category is where rules and remedies come in.

Time of day matters too. Many cities and leases set quiet hours, often starting around 10 p.m. and ending in the early morning. Noise that is tolerable at 3 p.m. may be a violation at 1 a.m.

Start with a calm, friendly conversation

It is tempting to leave an angry note or bang on the ceiling, but neither tends to work. People are often unaware how far sound travels. Catch your neighbor when you are both calm, introduce yourself if you have not met, and describe the problem without blame. Something like: “I wanted to mention that I can hear the music quite loudly in my bedroom late at night. Would you mind turning it down after ten?” Offer your own flexibility too, since it makes people more receptive.

A face-to-face talk, or a polite written note if you are not comfortable, solves a surprising number of problems.

    Keep a noise log

If the problem continues, start documenting it. Write down the date, the time, how long it lasted and what you heard. Add short audio or video clips if you can, though be careful: recording rules differ by place, and in some areas recording conversations without consent is illegal, so stick to ambient noise and check local law. A log shows a pattern, which matters far more to a landlord or a court than a single complaint.

Check your lease and the building rules

Most leases contain a clause about disturbing other residents, and many buildings have house rules with quiet hours. Under the legal concept often called quiet enjoyment, you are entitled to use your home without unreasonable interference. When a neighbor breaks the lease by causing excessive noise, the landlord may have a duty to act.

Contact the landlord or property manager in writing

Send a short, factual message: when the noise occurs, how often, what you have already tried, and what you are asking for. Attach your log. Landlords can issue warnings, enforce lease terms, and in serious cases begin proceedings against the noisy tenant. Keep your tone professional. Save every reply, because a record of your attempts matters if you need to escalate.

    Know the local noise ordinance

Cities and counties often have noise ordinances that set limits on volume and times. Some are measured in decibels, others simply prohibit “unreasonable” noise. For a party that is out of control or noise that is clearly over the line, you can call the non-emergency police line or the local code enforcement office. Use emergency numbers only for actual emergencies.

    Consider mediation

Many communities offer free or low-cost mediation, where a neutral third party helps neighbors reach an agreement. It sounds soft, but it can be remarkably effective, especially when both sides have to live next to each other for another year.

Practical steps inside your own home

While you pursue a solution, reduce what you can. White noise machines, earplugs, heavy curtains and rugs absorb some sound. Moving your bed away from a shared wall may help. These are coping tools, not substitutes for enforcement, but they take the edge off.

    When the landlord does nothing

If the noise is severe, persistent and well documented, and the landlord fails to act, you may have further rights, such as a rent reduction or ending the lease early, depending on where you live. These remedies are technical, and acting incorrectly can backfire, so speak to a local tenant organization or attorney first.
