Grab Bars in the Bathroom: Where to Place Them and What the Rules Say

    By x96i8October 26, 2026

A wet bathroom floor does not care how careful you usually are. Most falls in the home happen in the bathroom, and for older adults, people recovering from surgery or anyone with balance trouble, a single slip can change everything. A properly installed grab bar is one of the cheapest, simplest ways to reduce that risk. The key word is properly. A grab bar fixed to a tile with a suction cup or anchored into thin drywall is a hazard, not a help.

Why a towel rack is not a grab bar

It sounds obvious, but people lean on towel bars, soap dishes and shower doors every day. These are not built to carry body weight and will often rip out of the wall. A real grab bar is designed and tested to hold a person’s weight. In the accessibility standards used for public buildings in the United States, grab bars must withstand a force of 250 pounds. A good residential grab bar meets a similar standard and is installed into solid framing or proper blocking.

What a safe bar looks like

Look for a bar with a diameter that is comfortable to grip. The accessibility guidelines specify a round cross-section of about 1.25 to 1.5 inches, which most hands can wrap around securely. The bar should stand off the wall about 1.5 inches so that fingers can slip behind it, and the surface should be smooth enough to slide a hand along without catching, yet textured or finished so it does not become slippery when wet. Stainless steel, brushed finishes and powder-coated metals are common.

Suction-cup grab bars are not recommended as a primary safety device. They can release without warning. Use them only as a temporary travel aid, if at all.

    How high should it go?

Under the ADA standards, which apply to public and commercial buildings and give a useful benchmark for homes, grab bars are mounted so that the gripping surface sits between 33 and 36 inches above the floor. Individual needs vary. A tall person may prefer a slightly higher bar, while someone seated may need a lower one. If a household member will rely on the bar, have them stand beside the wall and test the position before drilling.

    Where to place them

The most useful spots tend to be:

    • Beside the toilet. A horizontal bar on the side wall helps with sitting and standing. A second bar behind the toilet can add support.
    • Inside the shower or tub. A horizontal bar on the long wall at the standard height, and a vertical bar near the entry, help with stepping in and out.
    • At the tub edge. A short vertical bar on the wall or an exterior mounted bar gives something solid to grab as you lift your leg over.

Place bars where a person naturally reaches when they feel unsteady, not where they look neat.

Anchoring: the part that really matters

A grab bar is only as strong as what it is attached to. Screw it directly into wall studs, or install solid wood blocking between the studs during a remodel when the wall is open. If a stud is not where you need it, use anchors rated for the load and designed for the wall type, or choose a bar with a mounting system built for that purpose. Never rely on plain plastic wall anchors in drywall for a bar someone will lean on. In tile, drill with a proper tile bit, avoid cracking the surface and seal the holes with silicone to keep water out of the wall.

If you are not comfortable with this, hire a qualified handyman or contractor. The cost is modest compared with a fall.

Do the rules apply to your home?

Accessibility standards are mandatory in public accommodations and many multifamily buildings, but they usually do not apply to a single-family home you live in. Still, they offer a sound guide. In rental housing, tenants with disabilities in many places have rights under fair housing laws to request reasonable modifications, such as installing grab bars, and landlords generally cannot refuse without good reason. The details differ, including who pays and whether the tenant must restore the wall afterward, so check your local rules and ask in writing.

    Remodeling: plan ahead

If you are renovating, install blocking in the walls around the toilet, shower and tub while the framing is exposed. Even if you do not need grab bars now, you will be able to add them later without opening up tile. It is a small cost that pays off.

    Use and maintenance

Test each bar firmly after installation by applying body weight. Check it periodically for loosening. Keep it clean, and replace it if you see rust, wobble or cracks in the mounting plate.
